Bathroom Regulations
IEE Wiring Regulations (17th Edition) have identified certain zones within the bathroom to indicate which type of electrical equipment can be fitted. Lighting deemed suitable to go in these zones are given an Ingress Protection (IP) number, such as IPXY, where X and Y are numbers. The X shows the level of mechanical protection, and the Y shows the level of moisture protection. In both cases, the higher the number, the better the protection. If a piece of equipment does not have an IP number, it must not be used in zones 0, 1 or 2. Outside of the designated zones you can use any standard product (IP20).

The zones are as follows:
Zone 0: Inside the bath tub or shower tray. Any fitting going in this area must be low voltage (12v max) and have an IP rating of at least IP67.
Zone 1: Directly above the bath tub or shower tray to the height of 2.25m from the floor. Products should be IP44 or higher and if the fitting is 240v a 30ma RCD must be used to protect the circuit.
Zone 2: Over the bath tub or shower tray above zone 1. It also covers the area stretching 0.6m outside the perimeter of the bath and to a height of 2.25m from the floor and the area around the wash basin, within a 60cm radius of any tap. Lighting in this area should be at least IP44.
Note: If there is a likelihood of water jets being used in zones 1 or 2, i.e. for cleaning, a fitting rated a minimum of IP65 must be used.
